Manager, Sustainability Standards

Play an important role in making long-lasting changes to climate and green building policy as the Manager, Sustainability Standards for American Wood Council (AWC).

Wood products are poised to be a substantial part of reducing carbon emissions through the built environment, and this position will be responsible for providing support and leadership for sustainability standards including ISO, ASTM, ASHRAE. Focus is on ensuring these standards treat US wood products fairly, accurately, and feasibility for wood products manufacturers in the United States.

Location:

The selected individual is able to work fully remotely within the United States or may choose a hybrid work schedule with in-office and remote work in Washington, DC.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the sustainability standards landscape for emerging issues, the latest research, industry trends, and methodologies of green building systems and standards; identify opportunities and areas of focus for AWC and the industry.
  • Track and provide input on sustainability related codes and standards that impact the wood products industry.
  • Represent AWC in consensus-based and other standard development processes including, but not limited to, ASTM, ISO, ASHRAE, and other green building standards.
  • Represent AWC at standards meetings and hearings with various standard setting bodies engaged in construction product sustainability standards, product environmental attribute development; discern information to report and actions to pursue.
  • Build relationships and identify areas of common interests for partnerships with stakeholders, such as wood products manufacturers, consultants, other associations and wood products organizations, life cycle assessment tools, and ENGO’s working on issues around carbon management in building materials.
  • Work with Vice President, Markets & Sustainability and Director, Sustainability Standards to set industry wide strategic direction that can be applied in standard development forums.
  • Lead discussions to build consensus and work with membership to develop industry positions; provide input to help inform strategic and operational decisions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College degree in an environmental, natural resources, or sustainability focused discipline.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Critical analysis skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to travel as needed (up to 25%)
  • Must meet at least one of the below preferred qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of work experience
  • Subject matter expertise in communication of environmental product attributes or similar
  • Experience with ANSI, ASTM, and ISO standard development processes.
  • Experience with forest products sector
  • Knowledge of green building principles, sustainability standards setting processes, life cycle assessment protocols and product category rules development.
